Hands-on: This is the new OnePlus 5 Soft Gold

Every smartphone manufacturer seems to launch a new handset in a particular set of colors, only to follow it up a few months later with new color options as the initial buzz dies down. As predicted, OnePlus is no different, with the Midnight Black and Slate Gray today joined by the new limited edition OnePlus 5 Soft Gold color option.

The Soft Gold OnePlus 5 follows on from the success of the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T Soft Gold and is available today from OnePlus.net. It comes with 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage at a cost of $479 in the US, £449 in the UK, and €499 in Europe. OnePlus says this is a limited edition variant and will only be available while supplies last.

For fans of a white phone, the OnePlus 5 Soft Gold is the closest we’re likely to come and is the only color option to sport a white front. Like the regular OnePlus 5, it sports a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass 5 protection and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor with Adreno 540 GPU. The OnePlus 5 battery is a 3,300 mAh unit that stacks up well against the competition and there’s also a USB Type-C port, Dash Charge fast charging and a front-mounted fingerprint scanner.

On the back, the OnePlus 5 Soft Gold sports a subtle gold finish that is more of a hint of gold rather than solid gold and is soft to the touch. This is where you’ll also find the dual lens zoom camera, which is made up of a 16 MP camera of 24 mm focal length and f/1.7 aperture and 20 MP sensor of 36 mm focal length and f/2.6 aperture. The result is the ability to capture interesting bokeh effects using the portrait mode, as well as zoom a little into the image.

Alongside the launch of the OnePlus 5 Soft Gold, the company is also launching the OnePlus 5 Slate Gray in the ‘better’ variant, that has 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. This will launch on OnePlus.net in the coming weeks at a cost of $539 in the US, £499 in the UK and €559 in Europe.
